Circumnuclear obscuration of the Circinus galaxy by a starburst - radiation supported wall
نویسنده
چکیده
We consider the radiation-hydrodynamical formation of a dusty wall in the circumnuclear regions of the Circinus Seyfert 2 galaxy. We focus on the radiative flux force due to the circumnuclear starburst, the nuclear starburst and the active galactic nucleus (AGN), and analyze the equilibrium configuration and stability of the dusty gas in the circumnuclear regions. The mass distributions used to model the gravitational fields are determined by the observed rotation velocities of the stars and of the gas. Moreover, by using the simple stellar evolution in the circumnuclear starburst, the bolometric luminosity of the starburst is estimated as a function of time. As a result, it is shown that the radiation force by the circumnuclear starburst does play an important role to build up a radiatively-supported dusty wall of <∼ 100 pc, which obscures the circumnuclear regions with AV of a few magnitudes. It is also found that the age of a circumnuclear starburst when the circumnuclear regions are enshrouded by the dusty wall is constrained to be <∼ 10 8 yr, which is consistent with the age observationally inferred for the starburst, 4 10 yr −1.5 10 yr.

Obscuration of Active Galactic Nuclei by Circumnuclear Starbursts
We examine the possibility of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) obscuration by dusty gas clouds that spurt out from circumnuclear starburst regions. For the purpose, the dynamical evolution of gas clouds is pursued, including the effects of radiation forces by an AGN as well as a starburst. Here, we solve the radiative transfer equations for clouds, taking into consideration the growth of cloud...
متن کاملFormation of Obscuring Walls by Radiation Force from Circumnuclear Starbursts and Implications for Starburst-active Galactic Nucleus Connection
We explore the formation of dusty gas walls induced by a circumnuclear starburst around an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We concentrate our attention on the role of the radiation force by a starburst as well as an AGN, where the effects of optical depth of dusty gas are taken into consideration. First, we solve the hydrostatic equations in spherical symmetry coupled with the frequency-dependen...
متن کاملN-band Imaging of Seyfert Nuclei and the MIR-X-ray correlation
We present new mid-infrared (N-band) images of a sample of eight nearby Seyfert galaxies. In all of our targets, we detect a central unresolved source, which in some cases has been identified for the first time. In particular, we have detected the mid-infrared emission from the active nucleus of NGC4945, which previously remained undetected at any wavelength but hard X-rays. We also detect circ...

By considering the radiative force by a circumnuclear starburst as well as an AGN, we analyze the equilibrium configuration and the stability of dusty gas in the circumnuclear regions. It is found that the radiative force by an intensive starburst can support a stable gaseous wall with a scale-height of several hundred parsecs. Moreover, by taking the simple stellar evolution in the starburst i...
متن کاملNuclear obscuration and scattering in Seyfert 2 galaxies
We study the relation between gaseous absorbing column density (NH), infrared colors and detectability of the broad lines in a large sample of Seyfert 2 galaxies(Sy2s). We confirm that Sy2s without polarized broad lines tend to have cooler 60μm/25μm colors; this correlation was previously ascribed to the effect of obscuration towards the nuclear region. We find some evidence that Sy2s without p...
